It is a good job that wine is my passion as well as my day job, because it has probably never been more challenging. There is no time for calm reflection as many varied elements nationally and internationally force continual change upon the wine trade. At home the escalating duty on alcohol and the recent VAT increase puts pressure on us all.
Fortunately there is still much to celebrate! By working closely with our many suppliers and by controlling our own costs, many prices remain unchanged with a number even coming down. Alongside our established quality producers, I would also like to draw your attention to exciting new wines from Hecht & Bannier in the Languedoc, Pascal Gitton and Régis Jouan in Sancerre, Vega del Castillo from Navarra, Nieto from Argentina, Riddle Creek from Australia, Chateau los Boldos from Chile and a pair of delicious Portuguese wines. Please look under individual regions for more detail – there really are some tremendous wines that further strengthen the breadth of quality, value and individuality that we offer.
However the Euro still remains extraordinarily strong, despite difficulties in the so-called PIGS countries, which only further squeezes pricing on European wines. Furthermore the strengthening currencies of Chile, New Zealand and Australia have caused a significant upward cost pressure. South America, that wonderful source of excellent value wines, is also facing specific challenges. The dreadful Chilean earthquake of February 2010 caused massive damage to their infrastructure and a huge loss of wine, problems which still manifest in pricing and availability. Some Argentine wines, due to demand, are also in short supply – combined with racing inflation, this has similarly pushed up prices. There are interesting times ahead…
For those of you that have not met them, I am pleased to welcome Tim Evans and Russell Ford as experienced additions to our wholesale sales team.
We have now firmly settled into our spacious new premises in Depden Green, just off the A143 near Chedburgh. We are just 10 minutes south of the A14 between Bury and Newmarket.
