Somewhat to my own surprise, we continue to develop our selection from this vast region. In particular I draw your attention to the wines of Hecht & Bannier. When visiting their stand at the Vinisud wine show in Montpellier, I tasted their wines almost by mistake! I am extremely glad that I did so. The Languedoc white (Picpoul and Marsanne) is soft, elegant and gently spicy, the rosé fresh and appealing and the red rich and gutsy; further up the range, the villages wines certainly punch their weight and have garnered impressive reviews elsewhere.

Meanwhile our other producers are working hard to develop the value they offer still further. The Vignerons Ardèchois group continue to impress, with the inexpensive Coteaux de l’Ardèche range offering an easy drinking option. The wines from Fontvignes and Vignes et Clochers are made by a new winemaker and are showing a definite lift in class. The Ventoux from Domaine Arnoux and the Burgundian style of Louis Latour continue to offer considerable pleasure.

Finally a note on legislation! From the 2009 vintage France changed its quality classification: ‘Vin de Table’ and ‘Vin de Pays’ have respectively become ‘Vin de France’ and ‘IGP’ (Indication Géographique Protégée). While many growers will continue to strive for the best quality under the IGP banner, less restrictive production quotas for Vin de France may lead to an influx of flavoured alcoholic water from unscrupulous shippers!
