About Nethergate Wines
Nethergate Wines are independent wine merchants based near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
Charles and Rosie Eaton met whilst working for Lay and Wheeler over 30 years ago. After managing Lay & Wheeler’s retail outlets for several years, Charles decided to broaden his wine knowledge and embarked on a three-year wine trip. Working vintages with Blanck in Alsace, Leflaive in Burgundy, Henschke in Australia and Milton in New Zealand, his extensive wine explorations have included visits to Chile, Argentina, California and many of the wine regions of Europe. Rosie has had a varied career, as well as caring for their two sons. She has worked in the wine trade, and spent ten years in publishing, whilst running her outside catering company. After a six-year sojourn at The Ickworth Hotel, Bury St Edmunds, as Sales Manager, she joined Charles in the management buyout of Nethergate Wines in 2006.
Emma Gower, our chief factotum and manager of all, comes from a restaurant background. She managed two restaurants in Long Melford and Sudbury, before we enticed her to join us. Her many years in the trade give her a keen understanding of the nuances of the restaurant trade.
Gillian Gilbert is our no-nonsense one-woman accounts department, juggling our foreign exchange requirements internationally and our purchase orders, whilst also trying to keep Charles ‘s enthusiasm for buying new wines in check. Our wine samples keep Gill happy but never quiet!
Russell Ford first worked with Charles at Lay Wheeler in the 1980s. His quiet manner belies his depth of wine knowledge and his terrier- like instinct when looking after his wholesale wine customers.
Steve Filbey ran C2C wines for many years before joining us in 2017. Steve brings his ebullient charm and many years of experience in the trade to the team.
